several strategies and ideas helped me develop a positive relationship with my use of social media

when it comes to self*development, social media usage and its negative effects are one topic that everyone runs into. after proving that to be true, which is not the article’s major topic, the focus shifts to the how. regarding the topic, i have noticed two questions during the past few years: must i give up using social media? how much is excessive?

i currently feel balanced but there is still room for improvement after a number of experiments. i’ll explain my responses to those questions and how i came to those conclusions before getting into the exact tools i use and how i use them, so the outcome — my usage presently — makes sense

1. recognizing the role that social media plays in my life
should i quit using social media altogether?
i began using everything when i was a young adolescent, including facebook, instagram, whatsapp, tumblr, twitter, medium, youtube, etc. but as the years went by, i found that i had less time for those social media platforms, so i began to eliminate them one by one. eventually, instagram, whatsapp, medium, youtube, and linkedin were all that remained

really though i tried going without social media for a while and found that i didn’t even miss it by the conclusion of the trials, i think they can still add just enough to make it tolerable. so, i made it my mission to comprehend the purpose of these particular social media, since if there isn’t one, there isn’t a reason to use it

the most important thing i needed to comprehend was how best to spend my time on social networking. today, i still possess these five, each for a different reason:

instagram: stay in touch with some pals. over the years, i gathered a sizable following, but i always make an effort to determine whether the relationship still makes sense. using a mobile device and whatsapp, i keep in constant contact with my parents, especially since they don’t reside in the same nation as me. utilizing linkedin on my phone allows me to research career opportunities and network. use of a mobile device; medium: read several emails i’ve received that normally contain tips and stuff i find most interesting. writing on a desktop, reading on a mobile device, and watching talks by well*known people and technical tutorials on youtube are all great ways to learn new things. computer use
how much is too much, exactly?
i mentioned earlier that i used to spend my afternoons and evenings as a young teen in the absence of these platforms. as the years went by, i began to track other things, including how much time i spent on my phone (will be referencing the apps in the next section). when i was a student, i recall checking my phone and realising that i had spent the entire day staring at that tiny screen for six hours

i made the decision to limit my phone usage to less than an hour per day one day, but it has only taken me this year to do so. three years prior, i had managed to limit my usage to two and a half hours per day, but that was it. only after deciding how much time i wanted to spend on each platform and setting a goal for each one could i achieve my goal

again, after many mistakes and failures and still constantly reevaluating, i arrived at the following conclusions:

instagram: i’ve gotten to the point where i sometimes forget to check this social media site, but i typically don’t even spend 5 minutes a day there. i currently set a daily time limit of 12 minutes for both linkedin and this social media platform on my phone;
i do regularly check whatsapp—at least five times per day. i don’t have a set limit for this one, but i turn notifications off for the majority of the day and only allow them to show up during my lunch break and between 6 and 8 pm, when i plan to use social media;
linkedin: i receive email notifications for conversations that are typically important so i don’t have to check it every day. i mentioned that i only have a short time;
medium: in my opinion, this lacks the addictive qualities that cause you to lose hours of your day. i don’t feel the need to restrict myself to just a few reflective moments with it because i believe it is designed for intentional actions;
youtube: sometimes i do need this for a long time, such as courses about specific technical subjects, i cannot create a time limit, but as it is extremely addictive i put some reflective moments just as my automaticity doesn’t get sucked into it as easily
