charlie boy intro (live from wrigley field) - the lumineers lyrics
[spoken]
well, i had an uncle whose name was charles, but everybody called him charlie
and uh, when charlie was in high school, he had these big plans ahead of him, he was going to be a medical doctor one day maybe
he was my dad’s eldest brother
and he was uh, one of the smartest kids you’ll ever meet
and uh, it all changed, he heard jfk, gave this beautiful speech
and he was so moved by these words, that he signed up, he volunteered to go fight in a war
i never got to meet this uncle charlie
and uh, you fast forward to today, and my sister’s been married to a green beret now for twenty years this year
and they have four beautiful children, they’ve been stationed all around the country and parts of the world
and uh, i’ve seen first*hand the sacrifice that they make as a family, all of them
and when he’s deployed, they’re with him
and um, so, just like my uncle charlie’s family, they put that sacrifice in, so does my sister, and so many others
so this goes out to those families put there who are doing the same thing, putting in that sacrifice
it’s called “charlie boy”
