[verse 1]
(bilal)
referring to this path in its first discourse the buddha called it the middle path
because it avoids two extremes indulgence in sensual pleasures which is low, worldly, and leads to harm
is one half
self torture in the form of severe asceticism
which is painful, low, and leads to harm on the other path
living in the palace amid song and dance luxury
and pleasure
the bodhisattva knew better by experience
but since pleasures do not lead mankind to true happiness or deliverance
six years of rigorous
mortification
which he as a ascetic so zealously practiced in search of purification and final deliverance
brought him no reward
(tajh and bilal)
it was a vain and useless effort
avoiding the two extremes he followed the path of moral and mental training
and through self experience, he discovered the middle path
and its grouped three areas
the wisdom group, the virtue group, the concentration group
yeah you know that, duke
o monks
it is through not understanding, nor penetrating for things that we have run so long for
wondered under long in this round of existence, both you and i
what
virtue, concentration, wisdom, deliverance
but when these four things o monks are understood and penetrated rooted out is the craving for existence
destroyed is that, which leads to renewed becoming
there is no more coming to be
(tajh)
further says the master
concentration o monks supported by virtue brings much fruit
brings much advantage
the mind supported by wisdom is totally and entirely free from the intoxication of sense desires
from becoming wrong views and ignorance
remember this
these things of the buddha explained the function and the purpose of cultivating virtue
meditation and wisdom
deliverance means living experience
of the cessation of the three root causes of evil
(who that?) greed, hatred, and illusion
all ignorance that -ssail the human mind
these root causes are eliminated through training and virtue meditation and wisdom
are the 8 fold path
(chorus)

[verse 2]
blessed is it that buddha’s teaching
aims at the highest purification
perfect mental health, free from all tainted impulses
now, this deliverance from mental taints
this freedom from ill lies absolutely
entirely, in a mans own hands
and those of no one else (not human or divine)
not even a supreme buddha can redeem a man from the fetters of existence
except by showing him the path
the path is virtue, concentration, and wisdom
which are referred to in the discourse as the three fold
training
and none of them is an end in itself
each one is a means to an end
one can not function independent of the others
as in the case of a tripod, which falls to the ground if a single leg gives way
so here, one can not function
like a man with out his baby
these three go together supporting each other
virtue or regulated behavior strengthens meditation
and meditation in turn promotes wisdom
wisdom helps one to get rid of the clouded view of the isms and schisms of things to see life as it really is
that is to see life in all things pertaining to life as arising and p-ssing away
is it not quite clear that in the inner pay of the doctrine
and discipline
or knowledge and conduct
the two const-tute a single product the process of growth
as hand washes hand
and foot washes foot
so does conduct purify wisdom and wisdom conduct (uh)
this way of life is however an intense process of cleansing ones speech actions and thoughts, yes
it is a self development of self purification
the emphasis is on practical results
not mere philosophical speculation
logical abstraction
or even mere cognition
(chorus)
right understanding
right thought
right speech
right action
right livelihood
right effort
right mindfulness, right concentration
this is the eight fold path, y’all
right understanding
right thought
right speech
right action
right livelihood
right effort
right mindfulness, right concentration
eight fold path
[bridge]
fly away
to a buddha ghetto, like right away
can’t you feel the love?
don’t die today
heaven’s right here, so don’t cry today
[verse 3]
in strong language
did the buddha warn his followers against mere book learning thus though he recites the sacred text a lot
but acts not
accordingly, that headless man is like a cow herder counting others flock
he shares not, the fruits of the tranquil man
though he recites only a little of the sacred text
but acts in accordance with the teachings, abandoning l-st
hate and illusion
possessed of right understanding
his mind entirely released
not clinging to nothing, here or here after
he shares the fruits of the tranquil man
the sweet smell of the pastures for the masters
these are clear indications that the buddha’s way of life
the buddha’s methods of grasping the highest truth
awakening from ignorance to full knowledge
it does not depend on mere academics
big schools and colleges
intellectual development
but on a practical teaching that leads the follower to enlightenment and final deliverance
the buddha was more concerned with beings than with intimate nature
the soul objective was to unravel the mysteries of existence
to solve the problem of becoming and what is this
he said mind your mind
the wise tame themselves
if ya tame yourself ya wise
mind your mind, the wise tame themselves
if ya tame yourself, ya wise
[outro]
(chorus)
right understanding
right thought
right speech
right action
right livelihood
right effort
right mindfulness, right concentration
this is the eight fold path (uh-huh)
right understanding
right thought
right speech
right action
right livelihood
right effort
right mindfulness, right concentration
this is the eight fold path
