st. james infirmary - stan kenton lyrics
[intro]
what i’m going to do is going to be so unusual
i think that it needs to be qualified
you know, woody herman and i have been contemporaries
almost ever since each of us has had a band
and i can’t help but honestly admit that
there are petty jealousies that arise sometime
i don’t know about woody, but they do with me
and it takes a lot of nerve to admit this publicly, but
you know, he’s a saxophone player, clarinet player
and i’m just a piano player
i just play one instrument, he plays two
and he also sings
and i must tell you i’ve resented that terribly
so for years i’ve secretly been getting coached by a great vocal coach
his name is ezekiel lipschitz
and i have studied for years and years, really, to try to make a sound
something i can be proud of, like woody herman is proud
he sings and plays the clarinet, saxophone
my coach told me yesterday, “it’s time for you to make your debut”
i’m delighted to have you, the audience, hear me first
now would you hang on a second while i get myself set here?
now, your cue, no applause, just yell
when i sing the first line of this song
just yell anything you can at me
just keep yelling so it’ll sound like an auction
with two, two thousand people trying to buy the same thing
so, this thing that i’m going to song is rather difficult
and even someone with my superior musical ear
find it difficult to just pick the note out of thin air
so forgive me if i cheat a bit and ask for a key note
is that a key note or an opinion? (again?)
again?
wipe yourself off
[verse 1]
now i went down to st. james infirmary
*whistle* (give me a chance, please)
i found my baby there
stretched out on a cold, white table
so sweet, so cold, so fair
[instrumental break]
[interlude]
how come when woody herman blows the whistle
everybody stops each time?
did you guys hear me blowing the whistle?
what? what? what?
second chorus
[verse 2]
now let her go, let her go, god bless her
wherever she may be
she can look this whole wide world over
she’ll never find another sweet man like me
[interlude]
you sing that with such sincere conviction, it was [?], jesus
it’s stunning the way you just, uh—
[instrumental break]
[interlude]
i swear, someday i’m gonna have a band with no musicians in it
you got one!
[verse 3]
now when i die, i wanna be buried in straight*lace shoes
a box*back coat with a stetson hat
just put a twenty*dollar gold piece on my watch chain
so the boys will know that i died standing pat
