career born - shy diago lyrics
it was the end of december, yeah, for all i remember
my teacher was sayin’ we had a project to send in
it needed to be creative for him to appreciate
and i was h-lla tweakin’ cuz there was nothing that seemed to shake
his unnerving standards it was par for the course
for you to take a swing and end up needing some more
so i chose the biggest club, and i sat in the driver
my topic of choice was the final decider
lincoln-douglas debates, my options were clear
performin’ a rap battle was obvious here
to start, i would need to get my obstacles cleared
nervousness would have to be an optional fear
and i ended up k!llin’ it like an imminent eminem and
just listenin’ to me spit get you trembling yet again
now i’d sowed in my heart a new love for the rap
like i was owed another part in this place on the map
so i listened, to every single rapper i could
without missin’, the lines others misunderstood
started kissin’, up to every style that popped
all the lessons, taught me how to get to the top
and so was path that my life was pavin’
i was put on a diss that was aimed at pavan
wrote about his house that was burnin’ down
sh-t was similarly fire playin’ ‘round the town
learned that dissin’ was my thing and i was basically king of
the verbal p-ssin’ match i’m in givin’ the lyrical finger
then not one, but two, pieces i wrote
they were dumb, i knew, they both were a joke
to my cl-ss i presented my masterpiece (i thought)
they asked me why the track was so -ss to hear (oh god)
guess my raps musta been so d-mn bashful
that they said they’d call me shy like i’m a rapper from nashville
armed with a name i thought i’d enter the game
planned to drop an alb-m just as soon as i came
every body gave me sh-t no body had any confidence
had me always doubting if i should’ve e’er even gone for this
did all my recording, mixing, one man team
but shoutout the producers makin’ drake type beats
i wasn’t fast, and my voice was -ss
basically sounded like a lumberjack
and then i realized, that ya i could write, but not songs
my inner demons, couldn’t tell the rights from the wrongs
i started fearin’, and only ever wrote intermittent
never finished, the alb-m i was basically quittin’
hopped in the car turned on kendrick’s money trees
inspired me to drop the track young royalty
but still ain’t got no gains in my fans’ loyalty
my own girlfriend would even go and make fun of me
then come july 29th of twenty-eighteen
she crossed the line this time and it was too h-lla mean
and that same magic, that kept me tickin’ so long ago
came back drippin’, along with a cadence and flow
suddenly re-energized, can see bars with better eyes
if hanson is doin’ it then i sure as h-ll better try
can take it way more serious, my -rs-nal’s versatile
i put lyricism first, despite the certainty that you’ll cry
shoutout drake, cole, kendrick, em, jay z and biggie
y’all the greats, that i listened to since way before ‘03
you don’t know me, the way i get excited to write
not black, not white, but i still do it right
so to everyone who helped me i would now like to thank ya
the writers’ blocks been crashin’ down like i f-cked up jenga
here’s the alb-m that’ll leave you with your d-cks out like in queer p-rn
i’m just glad i finally got my career born
hope you enjoy
