scene x "all the beasts walk on the ground ..." - olga neuwirth lyrics
[children chorus]
all the beasts walk on the ground
dance in a circle round and round
and all the birds fly in the air
fly round and round in a circle there
and then they roar and sing and whistle and cry
till the noise is heard from side to side
watches and oaks, custard and cloaks!
hand in hand, on the edge of the sand
the owl and the p*ssycat danced by the light of the moon
the moon, the moon, the moo moo moo moon
they danced by the light of the moon
who comes along the village way
with pipe and drum in brave array?
thank you…
[narrator]
orlando understood that when mеn write about history
women’s history often gеts lost or misrepresented
she wanted to revise the concept of history
the fact that within the lives of so many girls and women
there was always something hidden
there was an alarming increase in s*xual assaults upon children during the victorian era
the patriarchal family was the normative family
and it often still remains the “ideal” family in many parts of contemporary society
victims of incest run great risk in breaking the silence about their s*xual abuse
and the feelings of profound and utter powerlessness
accompanied by the survivor’s inability to stop abuse
[female chorus & children chorus]
we have been excluded from existence
when awful darkness and silence reign
over the great gromboolian plain
…plains still roams the dong
[orlando]
i write about a child abandoned
a child at risk
[narrator]
a child betrayed
[children chorus]
ring*a*ring o’ roses, pockets full of posies
ashes, ashes, we all fall down
[narrator]
what awful lives children live!
home — a peaceful place?
a peaceful place, so it looks from sp*ce
a closer look reveals the real human race
and am afraid there’s a fear down here we can’t forget
[children chorus & orlando]
lonely and wild all night he goes
oh my dear children, i will always be against power and dominance
(the man with the big…)
listen, children need care and protection!
[female chorus]
it waved above our infant might
when all ahead seemed dark as night
the banner bright, the symbol plain
of human right and human gain
with heads uncovered swear we all
to bear it onward till we fall
[narrator]
there are moments of closeness and pleasure for the children
and orlando’s writing was her own ticket to survival
even though it often caused her pain
because traumatic experiences are too big to recall in ev’ry detail
(which side are you on?)
[putto & orlando & children chorus & angel]
on the coast of coromandel where the early pumpkins grow
in the middle of the woods, lived a little, little girl
you wander above in light
close beside a leafy thicket
i wish i could cry
the plex had bewildered on in my cry
i hear your cry!
alone in my room
[putto & orlando & children chorus]
oh, for the wings, for the wings of a dove!
far away, far away, far away, far away would i live! (eternally blooming is our spirit!)
in the wilderness build me a nest (build me a safe nest!)
i would remain there forever at rest
and remain there forever at rest
oh, for the wings, for the wings of freedom
the wings of all, i would remain
to me there is granted no place to rest
far away, far away would i live
and build me a nest (build me a safe nest)
i would remain there forever at rest
