perspective - nzanzu lyrics
[intro: dawoud.o & nzanzu]
ils m’ont vendu leur rêve
sometimes, i feel like the world will never change
ils m’ont vendu leur rêve
and it’s sad ’cause we’re hungry for it
ils m’ont vendu leur rêve
but we can always make a difference
ils m’ont vendu leur rêve
tee hee hee mosees
[chorus: dawoud.o]
[verse: nzanzu]
uh, aye, check it
this ain’t to impose anything on anybody, this is just a message
you have your opinions and we have ours, so hopefully they are respected
it’s not in my nature to be super preachy and i don’t wanna be aggressive
so instead of guilt tripping i’m gonna give you my perspective
damascus, maryland in the early 2000s
lived in a nice town, residents, probably up to two thousand
suburban area so not as many black people as i remember
so whenever i saw another, i instantly thought of him like a brother
i wasn’t born with a purity, but like poneyboy i stayed golden
it took until the first day of kindergarten for my brain to start folding
always complaining that no one in the class ever looked like i did
then my mom explained the difference between me and them and something inside me ignited
my dad bought me a kids atlas so he could show me the motherland
he also got me a globe it felt like i had the whole world in my hand
with most of my free time i explored the atlas and thought myself about the world as a whole
from europe and asia to south america, australia, and even the north and south poles
and dude, i did this before i turned ten, so you really don’t have an excuse
to not know your basic geography, honestly, i shouldn’t even blame you
the history curriculum is physically hurting
it’s no mistake, man, they do it on purpose (why?)
to keep the minorities under their feet with no reach to the surface and keep us from lurking (oh)
you’re paying money to go to public school where you’re doing less learning
they’re doing more earning
and it’s evident cause the current president at the oval office is doing the burning
he’s a venomous spider and we are the vermin
and being alive is our biggest concern
and it’s funny how you realize that history class does not fulfill its purpose
’cause we’re right back like we never left
with the same pain that is in our chest
you took us from the mother land for your benefit without our consent
with a dirty routine, no wash or rinse
you just repeat, repeat, repeat
imagine standing there and having to watch your own mama get beat, beat, beat
barack obama, he was just an anomaly
seeing him win was like watching a horror scene for you red maga hat wearing racists
hopefully one day you all get a face lift
but lets face it
the same pain mlk went through to end segregation
is the same pain that we’re feeling today, different day but the same shhhh…
