herbert west-reanimator - navid jamshidi lyrics
sleeping soundly, calm and bright
till west called out into the night:
“wake up, you’ve got to see—
i’ve raised the dead; it’s clear as can be!”
“that’s nonsense, west, let me rest
i don’t have time for your crazy quest
the dream world calls, i need my sleep
don’t wake me up; my rest is deep.”
he pulled my blanket, filled with glee
“i won’t let you go—you’ll come with me
i’ve proof to show, so don’t protest
you’ll see my work and be impressed.”
“fine,” i groaned, “but make it quick
i won’t fall for another trick.”
we walked together, reached his den
where death was waiting yet again
a cat lay still upon the floor
its life long gone, its soul no more
i asked, “this is your great display?
it’s just a corpse; it’s passed away!”
“you doubt me? fine,” west said with flair
“i’ll prove to you that life is there
you think it’s dead, unmoving, mute—
but watch as i resolve your dispute.”
he fetched a vial, chilled and sleek
a serum cold, unique, antique
into the cat’s dead brain it went
and time stood still, with tension spent
a hiss broke out, the cat alive
proof that west’s work could revive
“your brilliance stuns me,” i confessed
“but this is madness at its best.”
the morning came; the class had started
we begged the prof, though late, and darted:
“let us in; we’ve things to show—
experiments that you should know!”
he sought a subject, something small
a c*ckroach dead beside the wall
“this lifeless bug will do just fine;
i’ll bring it back to life, divine.”
with needle deft, he pierced its sh*ll
and cast on all his wondrous spell
the bug arose, alive and free
a marvel of biology
the students gasped, the prof looked on
but then his heart betrayed his calm
the shock of life, the scene too great
had sealed the poor old doctor’s fate
“quick!” i cried, “the serum now!
we’ll bring him back; we’ve shown you how!”
we dashed away to fetch supplies
a vial and gun—both seemed wise
then hurried back to face the dread
and bring the prof back from the dead
but when we came, the sight was grim—
the prof was standing, stiff and dim
the cursed bug had brought him back
but left him feral, set to attack
“quick!” i cried, “the gun we brought!
it’s all we’ve got—our final shot.”
the prof collapsed, his madness gone
but all the class lay dead at dawn
the empty room bore witness still
to science bent to human will
“west,” i said, “your work is grand
but life’s no tool for human hands
it’s more than flesh, more than bone;
it’s something deeper, yet unknown.”
now we’re doomed, our tale untold
the truth ignored, the lies grown bold
the blame is ours; the gun they see—
our guilt will last eternity
