album review: mutemath - play dead - josiah botting lyrics
mutemath | play dead
released: september 8, 2017
genre: alternative, rock, christian
listening format: itunes
how did i find out about this alb-m?
i saw mutemath perform live with twenty one pilots in toronto back in 2016. i had never heard of the band before, but the concert was so loud i couldn’t understand the words. the instruments sounded really nice, so i looked them up afterwards. found out, they are good friends with members of switchfoot which is why i found they sound similar. i have been waiting for new music since their song “changes” was released last year
opening statements | what did i think of the alb-m
this alb-m is amazing. i love how the drums sound, and that the group switched back to real drums rather than electronic drums. i enjoy the electronic samples found on “stroll on” and “war” while adding the real drums in the mix
how many times have i listened to this alb-m?
i can’t even remember. at least 5
track one: hit parade
runtime: 5:15
rating: 10/10
favourite line: tie yourself to me / cavernous jewelry
the first track and single from play dead called “hit parade” brings back the nostalgic feel that fans enjoyed from odd soul and mutemath. i love the lyrics on this alb-m, and how they are so creatively unique and well crafted. i like the build up on the track with the piano, then hits hard with the drums. i love the lyrics on this song, and who would have thought to use the term “cavernous jewellery”, definitely not me. i like the mix of real drums and electronic vibes on the track. a great first song to start off the alb-m
track two: pixie oaks
runtime: 4:30
rating: 9/10
favourite line: my heart is beating like a drum
annotations: first | meaning behind “pixie oaks”
one thing that i love about mutemath is that they aren’t afraid to try something new. they see what works, and what doesn’t. this song, paul meany wrote about his daughter amelia. i think this is a very weird track if you don’t know that background knowledge. i think the approach that they took on this track is very unique. it goes from light and happy, to heavy hitting on the drums, while including the background vocals singing “la-la-la-la” at different parts of the song. i love the electric guitar solo on the bridge. this track was very well produced
track three: stroll on
runtime: 3:58
rating: 9/10
favourite line: my heart is beating like a drum
annotation: first
this song was very different. it took me a few listens to really enjoy it, because i felt the ending threw things off. now, i listen back and it’s one of my favourite parts. mixed in with samples of what sounds like an old video game system shutting down, it is very different and vibrant with creativity
