mystery man - jake vaadeland lyrics
[verse 1]
one evening, as i prepared myself for bed
unaware of the vision that would soon enter my head
i talked to my lord until i drifted off to sleep
and what i saw next, to this day, my memory does keep
[verse 2]
in a coffee shop along a worn highway somewhere
my dear mother and i sat patiently there
watching and waiting for the mystery man
who sent us the word and made up this plan
[verse 3]
from outside the shop, i heard an old familiar sound
rumbling along the gravel of that parking lot ground
then shivers and pins went up and down through my back
as i saw the appearance, so rusty, old, and black
[verse 4]
the door of this truck did open up wide
and i knew that the mystery man was inside
but ’twas a mystery no longer when i saw the bald head
of a frail old man whom i thought was dead
[verse 5]
i could not believe what was before my eyes
i thought that for sure it was all one big lie
but when i smelled the stench of that cigarette smoke
i knew that this meeting was not just some joke
[verse 6]
through the door of the shop this old man did waddle
with a cigarette in one hand and in his other, a beer bottle
he wore old faded blue jeans and a plaid b*tton*up shirt
and resting gently atop his head, a blue mesh hat covered in dirt
[verse 7]
as he got closer, i saw his bright oily face
full of age marks and scars but yet full of grace
he walked to our table and looked down with a grin
and then he sat down gasping and wheezing and all out of wind
[verse 8]
he said, “good on ya, lad, you’re all grown up
i remember back when you were just a wee pup
i hear you play music and you dress mighty fine
reminds me of when i was young, back in my time”
[verse 9]
he said that he’d been keeping his eye on me
and that he was very pleased by what he did see
he said that he was proud of his fine young lad
and by the look on his face, i knew he was glad
[verse 10]
could not find within me all the words i wanted to say
before this old man stood up, turned around, and walked away
he opened up the door to that old black truck and then
my grandpa drove back to heaven again
