the black arts repertory school was started by a man by the name of amari baraka, a former howard university pre-med student who was expelled from college for protesting civil rights and being a communist. amari nudist theory was thought to be communist but amari baraka was really visionary

in 1967, malcolm x and martin luther king, civil rights leaders were stained to rest the black arts repertory theatre/school of the arts was opened to african american students who wanted to study music, dance, theater and writing. the black arts repertory school was created to offer courses that would promote cultural values of the civil rights struggle
the civil rights era was time of unrest, protest and riots when blacks fought for equality. amiri baraka’s involvement in the civil rights era was to become the response through the arts to protest for racial equality, economic succession, voting rights, segregated housing, education diversity and nationalism. in newark, new jersey there was a rebellious riot where black people were accosted by the police in shootings and public unrest. public scrutiny left many black people victims of unified political opposition
